How to teach the WHAT

MUSIC can be heard, sung, played, moved to, written, read,  created, and thought.  Sequentially teaching rhythmic and melodic  concepts with these eight distinctions enables children to retain and  gain a more complete understanding of music.   Steps to Music Literacy  systematically nurtures children to master rhythmic and melodic  concepts using quality folk songs and masterworks through a 13 step  pyramidal process that incorporates best practice teaching techniques.   Children are very smart individuals.  They love music and are eager to  learn about it.  Experiencing music through singing, hearing, playing,  moving, writing, reading, creating and thinking gives students the  opportunity to feel exuberance, develop masterful understanding, and  gain life-long appreciations for the art of music.

Limited expectations produce limited results; likewise, limiting what  children experience will limit what they learn.  Rising to the call for  excellence in teaching is a necessity during the 21st century of high  standards and accountability.  To meet such demands, top-notch  expectations for teachers and students are essential.  The Steps to Music Literacy process and materials provide a clear, sequential, systematic system  for bridging the unknown to mastery of music concepts for children in  grades K-5.   The Steps to Music Literacy process is based on a layered  pyramid.  The 13 activities actively engage children in music.  One  rhythmic or melodic concept is taught by completing all 13 steps.  The  base of the pyramid is where the students begin to learn the basic  knowledge about a new music concept with teacher-guided activities.  The  middle of the pyramid is where students apply learned skills and become  more independent.  The top of the pyramid is where students create and  use higher level thinking skills leading to mastery.

Steps to Music Literacy will take teachers on a journey that  will inspire them to rethink how music has been traditionally taught.   This journey will guide them and their students from sound to symbol and  beyond...
